September 2017 – Slovenia
Maybe you’ve read about our trip to Croatia (here) before. Well, after we decided to leave Croatia behind, we spent some days in Slovenia and we fell in love. This little country has so much to offer and we had no clue about it. Ljubljana, with its beautiful architecture, lake Bled that looks so perfect, plenty of outdoor activities, lake Bohinj and the Julian Alps. And the best: it seems to be not on the tourist map (yet). We came with no expectations and had an amazing time.
Most of our time we spent hiking in the Triglav national park. And wow, it was so beautiful. We felt so refreshed after just a few days in the nature!
But on a side note: Never trust the time estimations of Slovenian hikers! We do hike regularly, but Slovenians seem to be crazy about their mountains and hiking there. We felt so slow compared to all the locals.
We’re telling you this, because we couldn’t finish our route on time. We tried to take pictures only once in a while and hurry up to make it on time. But the sun was about to set and we were still 3 hours away from the hut where we had all our things. Luckily, we found another hut on the way and decided to stay there and walk the rest of the tour in the morning. We woke up with the sunrise, and to watch it from the top was such a beautiful view! Then we started the last portion of our hike. From far we heard some animals roaring. For us it was totally clear that it were bears as we just read that Slovenia has the biggest population of brown bears in Europe. No need to say how frightened we were!
When we finally finished our hike and safely returned to our hut, the staff told us that our sound recording was the one of a moose – not of a bear. So that one hour that we almost didn’t move or make a sound in the middle of the hike was absolutely unnecessary, but now we have a good story to tell about our encounter with Slovenian nature.
We go back to Slovenia every now and then for a short trip. We really love the people, the food and the nature there. Every time we’re there, we feel so relaxed. Everyone seems to be a nature person and enjoys spending time outdoors. That’s why we love this little country.
See you soon Slovenia!
